Brilliant Nonsense |
I believe in love, stardust, poetry & swear words. "Totally mad. Utter nonsense. But we'll do it because it's brilliant nonsense." -Douglas Adams |

Chase & Status ft. White Lies - Embrace
It’s true, isn’t it? Music inspires, enlightens, casts down, raises up, triggers, broadens, opens, and relates…music can make one feel all the burdens and tragedies of the world, at once, or feel bursting with a happiness and hope that cannot be described. Music talks to us in a language beyond our own comprehension, but one that we understand in a peripheral, obscure way. It is the speech of the gods. It touches deeply parts of us that we might not have known were there, it digs emotions up out of us like buried treasure, and parades them for the world to see. It sympathises, empathises, fills us with a deeper and more beautiful understanding of the world. Music redeems us from ourselves, casts us into reality and out of it…transposes us between worlds. When brilliant phosphorescent snakes of melody are slithering before my eyes, or deep and resonant footsteps of rhythm are shaking my eardrums, or layers of thick wooly tonality are wrapping themselves around my heart…I feel alive. I feel human and superhuman at once. I feel like all the world makes sense, either in a continuum of darkness or a continuum of light, or an intricate mixture of the two. It doesn’t matter what feeling is tickled and turned, what matters is IT IS JUST. IT IS REAL, and it MAKES SENSE…it makes sense because music tells it to. Music weaves the pattern of all the world…marking it’s troughs of melancholia, highlighting it’s peaks of ecstacy, penetrating through all layers of lies and destruction. Revealing truth and the absolute.
Music that is heard with your metaphorical ear is music that changes you, that moves you and shapes you, that morphs you every time you hear it, and inspires in you thoughts that might never have occured otherwise. It can depict things that there exist no words for - like the depth of love, the anguish of pain, or the anguish of love, and the depth of pain…or the colour of happiness, or the hue of hope. It illustrates a moment, it shadows an experience. It swims alongside life veraciously and effervescently, with a foamy, frothy fervor…existing on several planes at once, and can transport us through all it’s planes, giving us a freedom to move found nowhere else. Music reminds us of our humanity, connects us to life and to the rest of the world. It is never arcane or elite, it is the essence of our humanity, it is blood infused with ours to bring us closer to ourselves. It plucks at everything we know, it pulls us in all directions at once, it kidnaps us from daily existence and takes us to the heavens to hear Apollo on his lyre…When all is said and done, it remains.
To hear a great piece of music for the first time is like standing under a cascading shower of sunlight, feeling the ins and outs and the warmth and the breadth of tingling joy that spreads throughout your entire being. It spills through all the eternal truths of our souls, and of the world, turning on each lightbulb, forcing light into darkness. Each note a beacon, each phrase a lantern of verisimilitude, shining and illuminating us all.
